Note Purple

This is a small wireless speaker suitable for amplifying sounds from a phone or tablet. The speaker measures 6x2.25x1.25”, and weighs 8 ounces. On one end of the speaker are an Aux jack (3.5 mm), USB jack (5V for charging the internal battery), and an on/off switch. On another side are buttons to answer a phone, pause/play, or forward/reverse. These same side buttons also double as stop, pair, and volume controls if you hold them instead of simply press them. There is a tiny microphone/pinhead indicator LED between the buttons. The speaker is surrounded on 3 sides by a leather case. On the front of the speaker, the leather case opens to reveal the speaker itself; the leather case has a magnetic closure to keep it shut. In the box, in addition to the speaker itself, you also get a 14” aux cable for connecting the speaker to non-Bluetooth devices, a 22” USB cable for charging, and a 1 page (4” square) textless quick start guide.

I'm comparing the Antec Note Portable Bluetooth Stereo Speaker to the portable speaker I have been using up until now. I've been using a Cubot Bluetooth portable speaker for my outdoor listening pleasure. It's been a good speaker, but it's range is spotty and the battery life, supposedly four hours, has not lasted that long for me. I am lucky to get three hours from it. If I go onto my front deck and try to put it on the deck rail and don't bring my cell phone outside to be within six feet of it, sound cuts out.

Range

I put the Antec to the test, as I am sick of having to have my cell phone close to the speaker. If I'm outside, I don't want to have to have my phone out, too, I just want to stream music. With the Antec, it boasts a 30 foot range. I found that's pretty accurate as I could get half way to the mailbox before it cut out.

The Antec Note speaker is even smaller than I expected, at 6 1/8 in. long.

It pairs automatically by Bluetooth as "Note" when powered on. A 3.5 mm audio cable is included for wired connections.

There is a power switch on the end and sleep/wake magnets in the flip-down cover. The magnets work well and initiate an almost instantaneous Bluetooth re-pairing. All of the other controls are standard for portable Bluetooth speakers, including a button for taking calls when paired with a telephone. The microphone works well.

The clever industrial design is what makes this speaker stand out. The cover that protects the grille when not in use flips around to form a base for the speaker while in use. The cover is a good quality synthetic leather, the grille is metal, and the edges have a soft-touch finish. It feels nice in the hand.
